Program

The Baroque Academy is a program for advanced amateur, pre-professional, and professional singers and instrumentalists who want to deepen their understanding of Baroque style in a dynamic workshop setting. Our workshop-within-a-workshop will focus on German repertoire, in particular the rich and challenging solo and ensemble music of Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach.  Pitch is a=415. Singers are especially encouraged to audition for the chamber music program, featuring master classes, small ensembles, and topic classes.  This is run separately from the opera project.

G. Ph. Telemann’s Der geduldige Socrates (1721)
Drew Minter, Director
Avi Stein, Music Director

about Der geduldige Socrates (Patient Socrates)
In 1721 Telemann wrote his opera buffa for Hamburg's Gänsemarkt theatre, where it was a great success and received repeat performances for the next nine years.  The requirement of Athenian law for a man to take two wives sets up the situations:  Socrates as a henpecked husband, and the rivalry among two princesses for the love of an Athenian prince, while they both spurn another prince who would happily be with either of the women.  The resultant communal anxiety causes threats of suicide until a solution can be found.  The score alternates between a buffo style and the high style of opera seria, with excellent arias as well as an unusual number of quality ensembles.
