City Recorder 2011 from Wendy Powers

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

A week after the CityRecorder two-day workshop, Valerie Horst and I continue to hear from students and faculty about what a fun weekend it was. Sixty students participated in forty-two separate classes from sixteen recorder teachers from the New York City area. Classes ranged from Machaut to Josquin to Handel/Bach/Telemann to Mozart to Brahms to Swing Band (go Stan Davis!) to Arvo Pärt to Armenian music, and everything in between. Ken Wollitz delivered a masterly double class on baroque ornamentation.

Richie and Elaine Henzler turned Teachers College into an urban branch of Courtly Music Unlimited.

Saturday evening, some students and faculty partook in a very lively dinner at Pisticci, a great local Italian eatery. After the last class on Sunday, several participants moved across 121st Street to Corpus Christi Church to hear Anonymous 4 sing music from the Las Huelgas Codex, part of the Music Before 1800 series, a great way to top off a very stimulating weekend.

Thanks to Alastair Thompson and Marilyn Boenau for all their office support. Thanks to all the recorder teachers who came up with such great topics, and who made the classes such a success. And thanks to all the students for joining the adventure of a new workshop.

Photos coming soon.
