4 Wednesday Sessions: May 8, 15, 22, (NO CLASS on May 29) & June 5
5:30-6:45 p.m. Eastern Time
Alexander Agricola (ca. 1446-1506) was born Alexander Ackerman around 1446 in Ghent. He is known as a Renaissance composer in the Franco-Flemish style, and his work comprises all important sacred and secular styles of the time, including masses, motets, secular chansons in forme fixe, as well as instrumental music. He was a prominent member of the Grande Chapelle of the House of Habsburg, and spent most of his life in Italy, France, and the Low Countries. Musically, his work creates a link between the earlier 15th century Burgundian style and the later generation of Renaissance composers like Josquin.
This 4-week notation series continues the exploration of secular and sacred music by Alexander Agricola we began in the Wednesday notation session immediately preceding this one. Prior experience with mensural notation, including fluency with moveable clefs, mensurations, and ligature reading is expected. Sound files of the pieces are accessible for personal practice between classes. This is the last notation session before the Festival and summer break. The early notation series will resume in September.
