at the Amherst Early Music Festival

The recorder has always been the most popular instrument at the Amherst Early Music Festival -- an instrument with a wide appeal from beginners to professionals, with a repertoire from medieval dances to contemporary extended techniques, from renaissance polyphony to baroque solos to folk music from around the Mediterranean. In addition to the wealth of technique, repertoire and notation class offerings in the Central Program, we offer three special programs for advanced and pre-professional recorder players.

*Recorder Boot Camp

July 8-15, 2012
Audition deadline:  April 15, 2012 (Limit 8 participants)

This is a rigorous program for advanced recorder players who want to make significant improvement in their technical and musical skills. The schedule will include master class, technique, ensemble, and practice time. Daily assignments will be given, and focused technical work and individual practice will be expected from each participant. If you are ready for a challenging week of work this could be the program for you!

*Baroque Academy

July 8-15, 2012
Audition deadline:  April 15, 2012

Recorder players in the Baroque Academy focus on Baroque repertoire and play with other instruments and singers in chamber ensembles and the Baroque opera project.  Master class sessions provide an opportunity to refine expression and hone technical skills.  On Saturday, July 14, they perform with their chamber ensembles in the Baroque Academy student concert.

**Recorder Seminar

July 15-22, 2012
Audition deadline: April 15, 2012

This challenging, fast- paced week of classes, designed to appeal to high school and college students, will include master class, ensemble, technique, and a recorder topics class. Students will develop a vocabulary for talking about the recorder and performance practice, and will be exposed to a wide variety of music. For advanced students who are not yet ready for Virtuoso Recorder.

**Virtuoso Recorder

July 15-22, 2012
Audition deadline:  April 15, 2012

This program is for pre-professional and emerging professional players with a high degree of technical proficiency, strong musicianship, and an understanding of Renaissance and Baroque styles. A daily master class and small ensemble offer ample opportunity for individual attention. Ensemble classes will use the Rogers Recorder Consort of Breukink instruments. Participants from past years have had life- changing experiences and made valuable contacts in this program.
