Martha Bishop

Martha performs on viola da gamba, baroque cello, and violone with New Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and Tourmaline (N.C.). She served 30 years as Music Director of the Viola da Gamba Society's annual Conclave, and 10 years as professor of cello at Agnes Scott College. As a pioneer in viola da gamba pedagogy, she produced many didactic works that are used worldwide.

More recently she has turned to composition and has had a number of commissions, publications, recordings, contest winners and a performance at Carnegie Hall.

She holds Masters in Musicology degree from U.N.C. Greensboro and U.N.C. Chapel Hill; completed post-graduate viola da gamba study at Cornell University with Dr. John Hsu, and composition study at Emory University with Dr. John A. Lennon. She is a Fellow in composition at the Hambidge Center and the Lillian Smith Center.
