Weekend Classes February 11 & 12

J.S. Bach is known to have enjoyed collecting the works of his extended family, from great-uncles to distant cousins!  A study of motets by these earlier Bach’s alongside the monumental motet, “Jesu, meine Freude” of J.S. reveals the progression and summit of the German baroque motet. Scores from ChoralWiki will be provided in advance; after examination and discussion, all will sing and play to recorded sound.

English Country Dance tunes have wonderful melodies.  But sometimes, someone else is playing the melody, and it's nice to have something else to do, other than doubling their melody.  You could make yourself a coffee, or sit and knit.  But we have lots of  specific tools to help you figure out things you can do that will complement what the melody player is doing. We will apply them to certain tunes, and you can try them out against the melody. Open to all instruments, anyone interested in English Country Dance music, or improvisation. Pitch A=440.

In this class geared towards high intermediate to advanced players, we will explore how the ‘ original’ “In Nomine” from Taverner became a rite of passage for any respectable English composer of the 16th and 17th century.  Composers include Tye, Byrd, Purcell, and others.
