Recorder Early Notation Ensemble with Patricia Petersen

For recorder players with a bit of experience with Renaissance notation and C clefs

Class Description

Bring Renaissance music alive by playing directly from the source! Sacred and secular, masses, motets, chansons, from manuscript and print sources of the 15th and 16th centuries, featuring music from cathedrals, courts, and chapels. Increase your fluency and strengthen your theoretical understanding while creating beautiful music. For recorder players with a bit of experience with Renaissance notation and C clefs. Class will review theory, ligatures, and triple meter, as needed by participants..

Class Description

Strengthen your ensemble abilities through playing consorts by composers of the Renaissance, Baroque, and beyond. While the word consort refers to a group of like instruments, and most often to music of the Renaissance, anything we play on a group of recorders could be called consort music. It is in this light that we will work on skills such as intonation, tone colors, articulation, rhythm, and more. All the while, we will discuss how best to play each piece: Where to play short and detached, where long and smooth? What tempo? Add ornaments? Which ornaments? Articulate in unison or according to each line? How do we stay together, all the way through the piece? What about tempo changes from one time signature to another? How do we go from sounding just ok to sounding really good as a group? These are some of the topics that will be brought up as you work on music with one of our consummate consort instructors

Recorder Technique: Tools for Better Playing, with Aldo Abreu

For intermediate to upper level recorders

Class Description

We will address all-important topics such as posture, holding the recorder, finger technique, breathing, sound production and articulation. The class will make use of my technique books: Finger Exercises for the Recorder, Articulation Etudes vols. 1 and 2, 4 Vibrato Exercises and Warmups and Technical Exercises. The technique books are available for sale the instructor or online at various early music shops. For intermediate to upper intermediate recorders.

Class Description

Class meets with Baroque Academy. Suggested repertoire can include but is not restricted to Van Eyck, Castello, Telemann, Handel, and others. Please bring an extra five copies for class study. 415 and 440 instruments welcome.

Renaissance Recorder Consort with Miyo Aoki

For players familiar with Renaissance recorder fingering who own or can borrow Renaissance consort recorders

Class Description

One-on-a-part consort for accomplished players of Renaissance recorders. Blend and ensemble skills emphasized. Repertoire will include but not be limited to the works of English composers Byrd, Ashton, Parsons, and Tye. Performance a possibility. For players familiar with Renaissance recorder fingering who own or can borrow Renaissance consort recorders. Due to the pandemic we will not be sharing recorders in class, therefore all players must bring at least two sizes.

Baroque Flute Master Class with Immanuel Davis

Class Description

This class meets with Baroque Academy flutes, and is open to Central Program players by permission of instructor. Suggested repertoire: any French literature including Couperin, Hotteterre, Blavet, Leclair and others; Telemann, including fantasies or Methodical Sonatas; J. S. Bach, including sonatas in B Minor, E Minor, E Major, A Major, or the solo partita in A Minor; C. P. E. Bach’s sonata in A Minor or solo sonata in A Minor. Pitch: A=415.

Oboe Band with Meg Owens

For experienced oboes, tailles, and bassoons

Class Description

Class meets with Baroque Academy. Our focus will be on Lully and Philidor, especially music from Le mariage du Grosse Cathos (A-D. Philidor, 1688). We will memorize one piece to play while marching in 18th-century style—this simple piece will be sent to you at least one month in advance of the workshop. For experienced oboes, tailles, and bassoons. Pitch: A=415.

Consort Music in England with Peter Lekx, and Larry Lipkis

For viol and string players (violins, violas, and cellos welcome)

Class Description

Consort music in England reached a peak of excellence in the late 16th and early 17th centuries and forms a staple repertoire for viol players today. This class will give you a chance to revel in the delights of the English consort with like-minded players – live and in person! Composers may include Jenkins, Lawes, Gibbons, Lupo, Ward, Ferrabosco, et al. We'll explore technical and musical opportunities (and challenges!) specific to each piece and the repertoire as a whole. Consorts will be carefully sorted according to level of technical and musical proficiency. Violins welcome. Pitch: A=415.

Harpsichord Master Class: Celebrating Composers with Anniversaries in 2022 with Kathryn Cok

Open to harpsichordists and other keyboardists interested in playing harpsichord and/or virginal.

Class Description

Performers are expected to prepare a piece before the workshop. For repertoire inspiration students are encouraged to consider composers whom we celebrate in 2022, which include: Jan Adam Reincken (ca. 1623-1722); Johann Kuhnau (1666-1722); Jacques Champion de Chambonnières (ca. 1602-1672); Georg Benda (1722-1795); and Johann Wilhelm Hassler (1747-1822). In addition, one of J. S. Bach’s greatest contributions to our repertoire, The Well-Tempered Clavier (WTC) Book 1, was first published in 1722, and is full of wonderful preludes and fugues. As always, other repertoire is welcome. We will focus on all aspects of technique, style, musical interpretation, and communication.

Baroque Dance Technique with Dorothy Olsson, and Mark Mindek

For dancers in the Historical Dance Program.

Class Description

Technique class in 18th-century dance with steps, step combinations, and arm movements. Note: Some classes will include work on alignment, mime, and stagecraft exercises.
Attention! First-week dancers who wish to audition for the opera project (The Judgement of Paris by Daniel Purcell) must arrive early to attend the following sessions: Saturday August 6, 2:00-5:00 pm: Baroque Dance Technique Class/Rehearsal Saturday August 6, 6:30-8:00 pm: Baroque Dance Technique Class/Rehearsal Sunday August 7, early morning: individual practice time Sunday August 7, 9:30-11:00 am: Baroque Dance Technique Class/Audition. Note: due to constraints of producing a fully-staged and costumed opera project in one week, dance roles in the opera project are limited to ten places, which will be determined by an audition on Sunday, August 7. Non-opera project dancers will attend opera dance rehearsals, and perform (with a separate music ensemble) on the student concert on Saturday, August 13. Sunday August 7, 1:00-4:00 pm: Dance Rehearsal for opera project, The Judgement of Paris.

Baroque Orchestra: Les Fontaines de Versaille with Frances Blaker and Patricia Ann Neely

Open to all Baroque instruments: winds, strings, and continuo, including but not limited to recorders, flutes, oboes, bassoons, violins, violas, cellos, basses, viols (all sizes), harpsichords, and lutes. Continuo players must be able to read figures.

Class Description

Elegant, colorful, theatrical, exotic, and just plain exciting works by Lelande, Bach, and Vivaldi will feature every section of the orchestra. This class is open to all Baroque instruments: winds, strings, and continuo, including but not limited to recorders, flutes, oboes, bassoons, violins, violas, cellos, basses, viols (all sizes), harpsichords, and lutes. Collegium: The Life and Times and Music of Mary, Queen of Scots with Larry Lipkis

For singers and instrumentalists.

Class Description

Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) was born in Scotland but spent her childhood in France, returning to Scotland in 1561 to assume the throne. In this vocal/instrumental collegium, we’ll explore the rich repertories of 16th-century French and Scottish music as it pertains to the fascinating and turbulent life of this celebrated queen. Open to singers and instrumentalists.
