A fascinating source held at Sibley Library in Rochester, NY, an original printed copy of Marin Marais's second book of viol pieces (1701) is chock full of handwritten markings indicating a whole range of expressive bow strokes, different ways of playing chords, short notes, legato passages, and more... and this has now been further elucidated by a more recently discovered manuscript (Villeneuve ms. in Paris BN) containing some of the same pieces, and many of the same markings. This on-line class will delve into the musical possibilities opened up by these sometimes enigmatic signs, with demonstrations, explanations of my process in deciphering them, and a chance to try them out yourself at home. The lessons to be learned are technical as well as musical, opening up a fruitful approach to articulation and sound production. My sense is that these lessons and techniques may be applicable to wind instruments, the violin family, and even keyboard instruments, and I will welcome adventurers ready to experiment. Explore two composers from two different centuries, both famous for their solo recorder repertoire: Jacob van Eyck (ca. 1590-1657) with his music collected in “Der Fluyten Lust-hof”, and G.Ph.Telemann (1681-1767) with his solo fantasias (TWV 40:2-13).

As part of the class, we will discuss questions of technique and style (including the differences between the composers), and interpretation. Saskia will demonstrate, and interested students are invited to play for the class as well. Some exercises for everybody listening and participating on mute will also be included. Learn the fundamentals of training and maintaining a healthy voice. As we look forward to this summer's festivals and workshops, many of us will find ourselves singing multiple hours a day (which is more than normal for a lot of us). How should we navigate our vocal health during a period of high use like this one? What can we do to prepare ourselves? What happens if we are experiencing hoarseness or fatigue? Are there any tricks for helping your voice recover faster? Answer all of these questions, and more, through this workshop! This course is open to all singers, but also to any person who uses their voice regularly. The advice and principles in the workshop will apply to all types of voice use, including talking, teaching, and singing. Open to: all singers or anyone using their voice regularly.
