Arise My Beloved: Sacred and Secular Songs from Petrucci Prints (1501-1504), with Rotem Gilbert, recorder

Come and play songs about different kinds of love: the famous florid setting of Tandernaken by Jacob Obrecht printed in Petrucci’s Odhecaton A (1501), Ave Maria gratia plena and Adonay sanctissime domine from Petrucci’s Motetti A (1502/3) and one of the anonymous De tous biens playne settings from Petrucci’s Canti C (1504). We will conclude with Surge propera by Johannes de Pinarol. This famous poem “Arise My Beloved” from the Song of Songs ends with the lovely text vox enim tua dulcis, et facies tua decora- for sweet is your voice, and your face is beautiful. All instruments are welcome. Open to: recorders and other instruments, intermediate and up. Pitch: A = 440Hz.

The popular French song “Est-ce Mars?” was set by many composers. This class will focus on sections of four very different settings of this delightful tune. We’ll start with a brief exploration of the van Eyck solo tune and variations, then delve into the polyphonic versions playing along with my GarageBand recordings. We’ll play an early 17th-century five-part canzona by Samuel Scheidt,  a movement from the mid 20th-century Partita in C for four recorders by Hans Ulrich Staeps, and selected variations by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. The complete Staeps piece can be purchased from the Von Huene Workshop or Honeysuckle Music.

Join us as we explore the rich repertoire of 4-part 16th century ensemble ricercars. Throughout the 16th century, imitative ricercars were commonly composed for lute and keyboard, but with the publication of Musica Nova (Venice, 1540) a new format for ensemble music was ushered in.  Designated not just for singing and organ, but "et altri strumenti", these and later publications of 1556 and 1577 open the genre for all musicians to enjoy. We'll focus on analyzing and playing ricercari by Segni, Malvezzi and Padovano, using specially recorded play along audio tracks. Open to: viols, and other instruments (please note the pitch A=415!), intermediate level. Pitch: A= 415Hz.
